The Trevi Fountain is one of Rome’s most iconic stops - and one of its most crowded. Baroque drama, cascading water, coins flying over shoulders, cameras everywhere. But visiting it now works a little differently than it used to.
Viewing the Trevi Fountain is still completely free. You can walk into the piazza, admire the monument, and take all the photos you want without paying anything.
What now requires a €2 ticket is access to the lower viewing platform: the section right in front of the fountain at the balustrade. This is the closest point to the water, and it’s also where you toss your coin.
Access to this area is limited at a time to keep the flow manageable. If throwing a coin into the fountain is part of your Rome ritual, you’ll need to enter this ticketed section.
Honestly? For most, probably not.
The lower level brings you slightly closer to the sculptures and the water, but not dramatically closer. The fountain was designed to dominate the entire piazza, and its impact is just as powerful from a few steps back. The €2 area doesn’t unlock a secret angle or a dramatically better view; it simply allows access to the front edge.
If tossing the coin matters to you, it’s a small fee for the experience. If it doesn’t, you won’t feel like you’ve missed anything essential by staying outside the paid section.

Timing makes far more difference than proximity.
Early morning, ideally before 8:30 am, is your best chance for a calmer experience. The piazza is calmer and you can actually pause instead of moving with the flow.
Midday is consistently the busiest period, whether you enter the lower section or not. Late evening is atmospheric and beautifully lit, but rarely quiet. Trevi is one of those places that never really empties.
The new access system changes how close you can stand to the fountain, but it doesn’t change the overall experience. You can still see it, photograph it, and enjoy it for free.
If the coin tradition is important to you, pay the €2 and step forward. If not, save your coins and enjoy the view from just a few steps back.
